A legal battle over whether or not the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is an ideological organisation could end up in the European Court of Justice, according to the church’s chairman Rüdiger Weida, above, who goes by the pastafari name of ‘Brother Spaghettus’.
Weida’s legal tussle with the authorities in the small German town of Templin, in the northeastern state of Brandenburg, began last year after the church was told to remove street signs advertising its services.
According to this report, when Weida lost the first round of a court battle in 2016, he complained:
We are just as serious as every other religion, and we want to be able to articulate ourselves just as seriously.
Angry Pastafarians appealed, and Weida took their case the Higher Regional Court, but lost again earlier this month
The court ruled that the church, originally founded to poke fun at “intelligent design” proponents, was not an ideological community, and therefore had no right to its own signs.
“Brother Spaghettus” now says he will take the fight all the way to the European Court of Justice if necessary.
Church members have a number of “holy” prayers. My favourite is:
Our Spaghetti
Who art in meat sauce
Flying be thy way
Thy meatballs come
Thy Noodling done
On earth as it is inside us
Give us this day our bolognaise
And forgive us our pizzas
As we forgive those who eat pizza before us
And lead us not to the salad bar
But deliver us from tofu
For thine is the gnocchi
The penne and linguine
Forever and ever
